Nikon D90 Users Guide

Ken Rockwell, well known photographer with a heavily trafficked web site full of great articles about cameras, lenses and making great pictures, has a cool online users guide to the Nikon D90. You can read it online or download a pdf copy for $5.

And he’s published a simpler version as an iPhone app available for $4.99. Both are solid resources from a season pro who knows something about teaching and writing good articles. But that’s not the best reason to buy them.

The best reason to buy them is that he’s provided a ton of valuable information for free on his site and if you’ve ever visited and benefited from his information it’s good karma to send a little gratitude to Ken for his work. It’s even better karma is you’ve never visited his site to go there now and check it out, then send your thanks.

I started reading the D90 Users Guide and quickly found myself clicking on several of the links in the guide to other articles from Ken. Each one gave me great information, a couple had me grabbing my D90 to see the results of his instructions. Well worth the time and money if you want to learn how to get the most from your equipment.

Of course, Ken shoots stills only and all of his advice is about shooting stills. So you’ll have to learn how much of that applies to shooting video on the D90. I’ll guarantee that you’ll find at least one good idea in a few minutes on his site. And when you’re ready to pick up another lens for your camera there’s not a better reference resource online. It’s all real world info from a working pro.

$5 for an iphone app, sure. $5 for a PDF? give me a break.

It’s interesting that most of the people who weren’t happy with their $5 iPhone app said they’d been happier paying $5 for the pdf.

Hmmm. One man’s treat is another man’s poison.

My perspective is that either way you get something that can be carried around and accessed quickly. And you’re supporting a person who supplies tons of solid info for free. Still seems like a good deal to me.
