Canon 5D Mark II firmware update for 24p – EDIT- not…

EDIT: turns out that was a Canon 1D Mark IV screen. Bummer.

5d_firmware update

No, it’s not official but here’s a video with a Canon rep showing a menu from a Canon 5D Mark II with 24 and 60 frames per second options.

It’s interesting because this guy is from the video side of Canon and explains how surprised the still camera guys were at the response to the 5D. They made it for photo journalists who might want to grab a bit of video for a web site during an event. That’s why there was so little preparation for professionals trying to shoot high quality video with the camera.

They also already had two more models in the production pipeline and making changes at that stage is not easy for a large manufacturer like Canon.

You’ll have to watch almost to the end – around 5:14 – before you’ll see the firmware update mentioned. The audio is bad, the camera work is shakey, it’s not a professional production in any way. But it is on youtube and it’s an interesting development in this market.

I love the idea of shooting HD level with a full size sensor. The ability of shooting in very low light and no lights,Is worth it on that point alone. The firmware updates being able to shoot 24,25,&30 frames a sec,is even better. As it matches the camcorders and the HD sets all over the world. This elimates the need of making a Pal and a NTSC version, just switch it to whatever.
About the only improvements I’d personally like to see is for DSLR’s to record video to a better codec with 4:4:4 or at least 4:2:2. With less compression in tow.

Yeah, I’d like the option to connect a DSLR to a computer and capture uncompressed video direct to disk. I’ve done that with HDV camcorders and the quality is amazing. It’s like working with RAW photo files with all the color information available.

I know there are tech issues to be solved but someone will do it. Looks like Scarlett is likely to be the first with RedCode RAW video.
